Digital Voting: Promise and Peril

Estonia has allowed online voting since 2005. Over half of Estonian votes are now cast digitally using a national ID card system. Brazil has used electronic voting machines since 1996, virtually eliminating counting fraud. India uses electronic voting machines across the worlds largest electorate. Yet most cybersecurity experts oppose internet voting for national elections. The fundamental challenge is verification: how do you verify that a vote was cast as intended without compromising ballot secrecy? Paper ballots provide an auditable physical trail. Electronic systems create software-dependent trust. The debate centers on whether convenience outweighs security. For now, the consensus among election security experts is that electronic machines with voter-verified paper audit trails offer the best balance of security and efficiency.
